From the corridors of schools to the aisles of organizational hierarchies, the principles of compassion and empathy remain timeless and universal. As leaders, we often look for large gestures to show we care, but sometimes, the most impactful actions are inspired by our past's humble lessons.Growing up, I watched my Dad, Mom, and Grandmother extend their hands and hearts to family and friends emigrating to the country. We always had our home open, and our table was always full, providing food, comfort, and a sense of belonging to newcomers to Canada. In grade two, I started bringing snacks for my classmates every day after lunch. The intention was simple: to ensure that those who didn't have lunch had something to eat. I ensured everyone received the same amount chips and snack that l placed on napkins on each of their tables. While my year-long gesture landed me in a meeting with the school's counsellor and vice principal, and with my parents, who were concerned about where the money was coming from to fund this effort, it soon became clear that my actions reflected the compassion and empathy I had seen and felt at home. The administration staff acknowledged the positive impact of my gesture, revealing that many students in our area often came to school without lunch. My small act of kindness helped bridge a gap many weren’t even aware of.Most importantly, my relationships with my classmates were strengthened. Some of the differences students felt were overcome as we shared a snack together and found commonality. This idea stuck with me. I grew up learning to listen, adapt, and follow the accepted norms. It was a way to navigate within the established paradigms. However, I quickly realized the importance of sharing my unique voice, views, and lived experiences. It became clear that we needed to include perspectives from every part of the value chain, not just the customer. This realization led me to set up Advisory Councils and peer-to-peer groups; these became incredible incubators and testing grounds for fresh ideas.I learned to appreciate ethnographic approaches and design thinking principles along my journey. I've been exposed to the brilliance and value of service-dominant logic and the vitality of cocreation when treating industry as ecosystems comprising various actors. In a world where roles can shift and multiple viewpoints are at play, gaining insights from various levels is crucial. Even machines and technology add to the diversity, as evident with the advent of generative AI. Designing for customer impact increases engagement and improves lifetime customer value and advocacy. Building trust with clients comes from listening to and, more importantly, acting on their feedback.
